TermiSoc

TermiSoc was the University of Plymouth's Students' Union (UPSU) Computing Media Society. It has existed since the early nineties and has traditionally had a membership of students from the School of Computing and the faculty of Technology. More recently, whilst retaining a strong contingent of computing students, students from other courses have been keen to join. Feedback from these members has indicated that they joined to support their academic activities: students have expressed to TermiSoc that their course requires some knowledge of ICT (word processing, HTML authoring and general IT skills) and have turned to TermiSoc for support in this.

We used to offer a range of facilities to our members:

  • Linux Based Shell Account
  • 500MB to 2GB Webspace, supporting PHP, CGI and both MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • POP3, SMTP and web-based email account @termisoc.org
  • Weekly Socials down the pub, at the cinema, anywhere we fancy!
  • Fortnightly tutorials on a range of computing subjects
  • Trips to various trade shows and expos

TermiSoc used to run its own servers,

TermiSoc exists to provide its members with:

  • Experience of using Linux and other open-source software, as both users and administrators
  • Web services, including Web space, PHP, CGI and MySQL
  • Email services
  • A forum for the discussion of technical and related issues
  • Tutorials in technical, professional and design issues

TermiSoc has the academic backing of Dr Phil Brooke who believes “it is appropriate that students who are interested in broadening their experience of ICT have the facilities to do so under the auspices of a student society” and therefore fully supports the activities of TermiSoc.

We also have links with the Devon and Cornwall LUG and our ex-members to provide a wide support base to our members.
