Scuba

The PADI Scuba Diver course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Diver course. If you’re short on time but really want to become a diver, the PADI Scuba Diver rating might be right for you, particularly if you expect to go scuba diving primarily with a dive guide. This course is an intermediate step for earning an Open Water Diver certification if that’s your ultimate goal.

PADI Scuba Divers are qualified to:

  • Dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet.
  • Obtain air fills, rent or purchase scuba equipment and participate in dive activities as long as properly supervised.
  • Continue dive training by completing the PADI Open Water Diver certification and taking certain speciality diver courses.

To enroll in a PADI Scuba Diver course you need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. No prior experience with scuba diving is required.

The PADI Scuba Diver course takes 2 days (or 1 day with the online academic) and consists of 3 main phases:

  • 3 x Knowledge Development sessions (online, independent study or in a classroom) to understand the basic principles of scuba diving – just the first three of five sections of the Open Water Diver course.
  • 3 x Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills – just the first three of five dives of the Open Water Diver course
  • 2 x Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore – just the first two of four dives of the Open Water Diver course.

PADI Referal Course

  • Phase one: Knowledge development. This is the theory part of the PADI Open Water Course, and you can opt to learn in the classroom or with PADI eLearning at your own pace from home or wherever you are.
  • Phase two: Confined water. This is where you get to go underwater for the first time! You’ll practice using scuba gear in a pool (or pool-like environment) until you’re comfortable. During the confined water sessions, you’ll learn the basic scuba diving skills in a progressive order, where each skill builds on the ones previous to it. PADI training includes practice “mini dives” to help you build confidence in your new abilities and practice your skills in various scenarios.
  • Phase three: Open water dives. This is the best part – it’s what you’ve been waiting for! The open water portion includes four dives in open (unrestricted water), including bodies of water such as the sea, lake, or flooded quarries.

You’ll complete some or all of the two phases (knowledge development and confined water) with an open-water referral before leaving home. You can finish the final part of your scuba course, the open water dives, aka ‘check out dives,’ anywhere.

  • Entrance to the Open Water dive site: £23 per day
  • Purchase of Mask and Snorkel: typically between £50-£150
